Ian Barrett, MD

Ian Barrett, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon. He specializes in the treatment of knee and shoulder conditions. His expertise spans minimally invasive repairs, complex ligament reconstructions and replacement surgeries.

Dr. Barrett is passionate about the problem-solving aspect of orthopedic care, helping patients return to their activities with less pain. In the clinic, he values the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and understand their unique challenges. "I see my role as both a surgeon and an educator," he says. "My goal is to give patients the information they need to make the best decisions for their health and activity goals."

Throughout his career, Dr. Barrett has worked at several Bay Area health systems, including large academic medical centers. He ultimately chose El Camino Health for its strong reputation in patient care. He appreciates how both the clinical and administrative teams work together to keep improving outcomes.

A lifelong learner, Dr. Barrett stays current with the latest orthopedic research and techniques to offer the highest level of care. His research interests focus on how biologic treatments, such as stem cells, platelet-rich plasma and collagen, can support healing after soft tissue injuries. He has published more than 10 peer-reviewed scientific articles, which have been widely cited throughout the orthopedic literature.

Dr. Barrett is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

In his free time, Dr. Barrett enjoys spending time with his family and staying physically active. He once completed a cycling journey from Sweden to Italy.
